Ultimizer Wood Series

A refractory-lined, dry-base outdoor boiler with a full-length quad-pass heat exchanger surrounded by water. Its sectional build means the water jacket unbolts from the brick-lined base and can be replaced with no welding, so it can be rebuilt rather than thrown away.

What connects the boiler to your house.

A wood boiler is only part of the system. We also sell the parts that carry its heat indoors. Tap a part to see where it goes. We tie in radiant floors, radiators, furnaces and hot water. How an outdoor wood boiler heats a house Hot water leaves the outdoor wood boiler and is pushed by a pump through insulated underground pipe into the basement, where it enters the manifold. The manifold feeds four separate branches side by side: a plate heat exchanger for the hot water tank, a coil in the furnace, the radiant floor, and radiators. Each branch returns on its own line straight back to the manifold, and one return line carries the water back to the boiler. Buying a boiler starts with what you need to heat. We'll size the boiler and plan the pipe run and connections with you, then handle the installation.

  1. Tell us about your property

    Where you are, which buildings you want to heat, and what heats them now: an oil or propane furnace, baseboard, in-floor or a wood stove.

  2. Choose the boiler and size

    We'll compare the Portage & Main and Polar Furnace options for your heat load and the way you like to burn wood, with current pricing.

  3. Plan the connection

    Where the boiler sits, how far the underground pipe runs, and how it ties into your system: furnace coil, heat exchanger, manifold or hot water.

  4. Installation

    We install the boiler and its connections, and can supply the pumps, pipe, glycol and treatment the job needs.

What's the difference between the two boiler types?

The Portage & Main Ultimizer is an updraft gasifier: it burns wood in a refractory-lined firebox with air fed above and below the fire, then pulls heat from the exhaust through a four-pass heat exchanger surrounded by water. The Polar G-Class is a downdraft gasifier: it burns the wood gases in a second high-temperature stage. Gasification boilers generally do best on dry, seasoned wood. We'll talk through which suits your wood supply and how you like to load.

Will it work with my existing furnace or boiler?

In most homes, yes. With forced air, a water-to-air coil goes in the furnace plenum and the existing blower moves the heat. With in-floor or hot-water baseboard, the boiler usually connects through a plate heat exchanger or manifold. Your current system can often stay in place as backup.

How far from the house can the boiler go?

It depends on your property and heat load. A longer run needs the right insulated pipe and pump sizing. Give us a rough distance and we'll plan around it.

Can one boiler heat more than one building?

Often, yes. A single boiler can serve a house plus a shop or barn, and domestic hot water, with separate underground lines and zones. The total load decides the boiler size.

Why do I need glycol or boiler treatment?

Treatment helps protect the boiler's water jacket against corrosion and scale. Glycol adds freeze protection in systems or buildings that need it. We carry both and can tell you what your system calls for.
